PAREF-SPRINGDALE advanced to the semifinal round despite losing its last match to Don Bosco Technological Center (DBTC) 1, 2-1, in the Aboitiz Cup Boys 18 tournament at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) last Dec. 6.
DBTC 1 ended its campaign on a strong note after scoring its first victory, 2-1, but it was not enough to prevent Springdale from moving into the semifinal round.
Springdale finished second in the group with six points on a 2-2 win-draw record and a goal difference of 1. USC also has a 2-2 record but has a -2 goal difference to settle for third place.
Springdale will face Group A No. 1 Don Bosco Boys Home in the semifinals, while Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu will take on Pomeroy in the other semifinal.
In the men’s open division, Don Sacradel ended up No. 1 in Group A after a 4-2 rout over the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) to finish the group stage undefeated. USJ-R also advanced as it got second place with six points.
Don Sacradel will take on the University of Cebu in the quarterfinals, while USJ-R will face Group B No. 1 Makoto, which also posted a 3-0 record in the group stage.
In Group C, the University of the Visayas and Leylam were set to face off last Dec. 7 for the No. 1 spot in Group C, while the University of San Carlos-Queen City United was set to play Don Bosco Magone. USC-QCU, the reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. champion, needs to win by at least 10 goals to finish as No. 1 in Group D and avoid a quarterfinal clash with favorites Leylam.
Southwestern University leads the Group D with 7 points and a + 19 goal difference while USC is second at four points and a +10 goal difference. ML
