Benguet town eyes surveillance center

MAXIMIZING the use of technology, Benguet’s capital town is planning to start the implementation of an information, communication and surveillance center.

This entails the plan of the Municipality of La Trinidad to install an initial 36 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the center of the town, trading post, public market and areas around municipal building.

With close to 10 CCTVs already installed, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management officer Yoshio Labi cited the use of CCTVs as a strategy in addressing proper waste segregation, peace and order and disaster in one surveillance system.

Personnel who will man the surveillance system will be an accredited disaster volunteer, one from the police and fire department who will work on shifts.

The operation center will then be connected to all other services in the municipality such as emergency medical service, peace and order, municipal disaster risk reduction office and police.

CCTVs are also eyed to be equipped with speakers to warn attempt of conducting crimes and violating municipal laws.

Local officials are optimistic for the operation and installation of the CCTVs in a bid to deter crimes in La Trinidad and address early warning systems among others.

Councilor Roderick Awingan added the goal to jumpstart incorporating the use of technologies for the local government is to help maintain the town’s peace and order effort and strengthen the neighborhood watch program as he also encouraged stakeholders to do their part.

This year, a total of P700,000 was allocated for the installation of CCTVs.

La Trinidad Mayor Romeo Salda said an additional funding of P700,000 will be infused for the project.

Although some villages have its own early warning system installed, the 16 barangays are also urged to install operational center and have its own CCTV cameras.
