Anti-jaywalking tops highly-complied laws

ANTI-jaywalking ordinance topped other highly-complied ordinances in Davao City as shown in the City Wide Social Survey Series 10 (CWSS 10) on Friday, December 7.

Data showed that 89.7 percent of the respondents answered that they have always been complying with the anti-jaywalking ordinance of the city, 6.7 percent said that they follow it sometimes and 0.8 percent answered that they violate it.

Last October 2018, the City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) reported that they collected a total of P35 million from 20,740 jaywalkers and other traffic violators apprehended for the months of September 2017 to June 2018.

CTTMO head Dionisio Abude in an interview with SunStar Davao on Friday said that the data may imply that Dabawenyos are aware and have complied with the ordinance but that visitors or other individuals from other areas coming to the city may not be fully-aware of the existing ordinance and thus violated it.

“Siguro yung mga nahuhuli natin ay yung mga hindi pa aware sa anti-jaywalking. Lalo na siguro na siyempre, yearly, may mga pumupunta dito na mga hindi taga-dito, estudyante,” he said.

(I think those that we have apprehended are not aware of the anti-jaywalking law. Especially that annually, a lot of people who come here are not from Davao or some are students)

“Pero sa mga taga-Dabaw, comply talaga tayo. Hindi tayo mag-violate dyan,” he added.

(But for Davao residents, we really comply. We don’t violate)

To address this issue, Abude said that they will put up information about the traffic ordinances of the city in its entry points and arrival areas at the airport starting next year.

They will also give out fliers and leaflets that would include information on traffic rules and regulations in the city.

Abude reminded the public to strictly abide by the anti-jaywalking ordinance because it will contribute to lessening traffic congestion in the city and for safety of the pedestrian.

In the CWSS 10, other ordinances that are highly-complied by the Dabawenyos are garbage segregation and waste disposal ordinance with 85.7 percent and senior citizen ordinance with 88.1 percent.

The least followed is the speed limit ordinance with only 47.3 percent and Davao City rainwater harvesting ordinance of 2009 with only 29.2 percent.
