Editorial: Davao's problematic drivers

DAVAO City has a problem when it comes to its drivers. This is evident with the recent data released by the Davao City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO).

Between September 2017 to September 2018, topping the list of traffic violations committed by drivers in Davao City is disregarding traffic signs with 13,291 apprehensions.

Road obstruction came in next with 13,102, followed by not wearing a seat belt (11,556), motorcycle drivers not wearing helmets (7,051), speed limit violation (6,390), illegal parking (3,811), and driving without a license (2,628).

These numbers are fairly big for a city known for its "discipline."

"Ang implication of this is either blatant disregard of traffic rules and regulation or ignorance or lack of knowledge or education sa traffic rules dahil ang driver ay hindi na dumaan ng seminar ay may license na," CTTMO head Dionisio Abude said on traffic signs being the top traffic violation.

It is also because of these violators, both private and public vehicle drivers, that the city is hounded by numerous traffic issues.

However, the number could probably be bigger. There could also be a possibility that some traffic enforcers are receiving bribes to let go of some violators.

There may also be drivers who may disregard the traffic laws because they are not afraid to get caught since they have someone in power who will help them out.

Efforts must be made by the city to add more "teeth" to its traffic enforcers to ensure there is proper discipline in the roads. Penalties for violators could also be made heavier to ensure that they follow traffic rules.

The city may also add more people to the CTTMO to ensure road discipline in Davao City.

However, there must also be a better method in disseminating information on the traffic rules in the city. The city government may want to consider putting a section on its website on the traffic rules in Davao City.

Likewise the drivers in the city should also be more knowledgeable of the traffic rules and regulations. They have to understand that this is for their own safety and other Dabawenyos as well.

One way we can ensure that the roads in Davao City are safe is when the drivers are disciplined and follow the basic traffic rules.
