CDRRMO conducts drills instead of costly trainings

DAVAO City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) said trainings for disaster preparedness are costly that is why they only conduct drills in the communities so that more people can participate.

“Costly ang mga trainings and also yung availability pa of the resource people like yung mga training providers (Trainings are costly and we have problems on the availability of resource persons such as training providers),” CDRRMO head Rodrigo Bustillo said in a phone interview with SunStar Davao Friday, December 7, 2018.

“Kaya nga as much as we want to capture the whole Davao City, pero dili man namo mahimo. Part sa trainings ang expenses kay you have to prepare the food and venue (As much as we want to cater the whole Davao City, we cannot do that. Expenses are part of the trainings),” he added.

In the City Wide Social Survey Series 10 (CWSS 10) of the Ateneo de Davao University (AdDu) Friday, it was shown that 76.5 percent of the Dabawenyos have not participated in any disaster preparedness trainings yet.

It was also discussed that the drills given to those 23.5 percent of the Dabawenyos who said that they already participated in these trainings were earthquake drill, fire drill, flood drill, tsunami drill, storm drill, and violence response drill.

Meanwhile, Bustillo said that CDRRMO prioritized hazard prone areas of high-risked barangays such as Barangay Bucana, Tigatto, Lasang, among others.

“Those people who live in areas where they felt safe usually do not participate anymore. However, we make sure that they are aware of our programs,” he said.

“We just legally conducted trainings in the barangays and our record shows that 50 percent of the barangays have been refreshed with the disaster-preparedness trainings,” he said, adding that they are continually intensifying awareness campaigns in the communities. (LHC)
