Survey: Dabawenyos ‘uninterested’ in being OFWs

MAJORITY of Dabawenyos signify their disinterest to work abroad, despite their desire to look for a second job, a local survey revealed.

In the City Wide Social Survey series 10 (CWSS 10) at the Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) last Friday, December 7, 2018, it showed that 88.1 percent said that they have no aspiration to live or work abroad.

Mildred Estanda of the Social Research Training and Development Office (SRTDO) said that two of every five Dabawenyos or 79.3 percent are looking for an additional work because their income is not enough.

However, despite the need for second job to sustain a family, majority still said they do not want to work abroad.

“When we say labor force economics, we define it as a total number of workers including the employed and unemployed,” Estanda said during her presentation of statistical data on labor force economics.

“Here in Davao City, when Dabawenyos are asked what were their status was in the time of interview, more than half of them or 60 percent responded to be working,” she said, adding that the data is relatively higher compared to six months ago.

In the data presented, District 1 has the highest number of individuals who are working with 63.3 percent, 60 percent of the respondents from District 2 have a job, and District 3 has 56.7 percent.

Meanwhile, Davao City Vice Mayor Bernard Al-ag said in an online interview with SunStar Davao yesterday that the data is an indication that the labor force in the city is now more confident in finding economic opportunities to sustain their needs.

“I think most of the Davaoeños realized the negative social impact of working abroad. Relevant numbers of our labor forces today are children of OFWs,” Al-ag added.
