New events for Sinulog to highlight local talent

CEBUANOS who want to have a good laugh or just want to be entertained will have something to look forward to in next month’s Sinulog, which will feature four new events.

Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, who chairs the executive committee of the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI), said Agik-ik sa Sinulog, Sugbuanong Musika, tribal band performers’ contest and short film poster making and CD labeling contests will be held for the first time during Sinulog 2019.

Tumulak said they want to showcase the Cebuanos’ talents through the activities.

“The appreciation for Cebuano talents is slowly fading as time goes by so we’re trying to revive it. This is also in preparation for 2021, which marks the 500 years of Christianity (in the Philippines),” he said.

The Agik-ik sa Sinulog will showcase the talent of Cebuano comedians while Sugbuanong Musika will feature the talent of local composers, musicians, interpreters and arrangers.

There will also be a search for the best tribal band performers during the Sinulog 2019.

Except for the search for the best Sinulog Dance Crew, which was cancelled due to budget constraints, all regular events during the Sinulog week will continue.

These include the Sinulog Idol, the search for Sinulog Festival Queen 2019 and the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Lalawigan and Sinulog sa Barangay.

The nightly activities at the Fuente Osmeña Circle and Plaza Independencia will also continue.

Other big events like parties and concerts will be held at the South Road Properties.

As for the Sinulog Grand Parade on Jan. 20, only two out-of-town contingents, which include Murcia in Negros Occidental and Placer in Surigao del Norte, have confirmed to join the parade.

Only five contingents will compete during the Sinulog sa Lalawigan: Carcar City, Ginatilan, Consolacion, Bogo City and Talisay City.

Barangays Sapangdaku, San Nicolas Proper, Mambaling, Talamban, Basak San Nicolas, Mabolo, Suba, Sawang Calero, Cambinucot, Cogon Pardo, Inayawan, Bulacao, Labangon, and Guadalupe will join the Sinulog sa Barangay.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) will also join the Sinulog Grand Parade for the first time.

Tumulak said the parade will have a better flow compared to the previous years since the contingents will have to start street dancing wherever their location is within the six-kilometer carousel route. RVC, RTF
