SWU, UC victorious in 1st Miglanilla Mayor's Cup

SOUTHWESTERN University (SWU)-Phinma Cobras and University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters surprisingly beat their more highly-regarded opponents in the opening night of the 1st Minglanilla Mayor’s Cup Inter-collegiate Christmas League basketball tournament last Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Minglanilla Sports Complex.

The Cobras, third place finishers of the Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte basketball tournament, defeated University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, 80-68, in the opening game of the tournament that has a total of P200,000 in cash prizes.

The Webmaster, on the other hand, who fielded out a new import in Nestor Kenfack, stunned Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) runner-up University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 72-68.

Both sides had a close battle in the first three quarters. But with consecutive turnovers by the Jaguars in the waning minutes gave the Webmasters a perfect opportunity to seal the victory.

An exhibition game between the Minglanilla Archangels and Balamban opened up the tournament. Minglanilla edged out Balamban, 84-82.

Five teams are participating in the weeklong tournament: SWU, USPF, USJ-R, UC and defending Cesafi collegiate basketball champion University of the Visayas Green Lancers. JBM
