THE Royeca Dance and Arts Center showed off an awesome interpretation of the classic fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty” during its ballet recital on Saturday, December 8, at the CAP Auditorium in Davao City.

Several students of the school, both from its branches in the cities of Davao and General Santos, made the audience reminisce their childhood through the story of the well-loved children’s tale that has already been adapted in different movies, television shows, and theater performances.

For someone who has been a fan of Aurora, the star of “Sleeping Beauty,” I have definitely seen different shows re-telling her story. However, it was my first time to see its ballet version. Thus, when I was told that I was covering the Royeca’s ballet performance, I got excited, especially that I always dreamt of becoming a ballerina when I was a kid. Going to the show means that I got the chance to watch my favorite fairy tale and a live ballet performance in one night!

In her opening message, the woman behind the successful Royeca ballet schools, MJ Royeca, shared that art is a perfection. She noted that as soon as you know one thing, you would realize that there is so much more to learn. In short, dance being a form of art, needs patience and determination to perfect every line -- pivot and step involved in any performance.

The “Sleeping Beauty” performance of Royeca’s students, who included toddlers, was the conclusion of their desire (and their parents’ too!) to learn the dance and re-live the story of Aurora as well as give life to each of the story’s characters - the king and queen, her godmothers, evil witch and the prince who woke her up from a very deep slumber.

Personally, I love the way the group presented the story’s climax or the time when the evil witch, named Carabosse, offered a “gift” to the infant Aurora. The evil witch’s performance really stood out for me because each of her moves was so defined and you could really sense the emotion such scene would like to convey.

The music used during the said scene was also commendable: the thrill was really in it. Of course, you can never deny that the one who portrayed the role of Aurora was so impressive, too!

The full-length ballet production of “Sleeping Beauty” was divided into four different acts, to wit: the prologue, the spell, the vision, and the wedding.

Meanwhile, the main characters were portrayed by the following: king, Richard Salvador Jimenez; queen, Lada Shastlivaia; Princess Aurora, Chloie Louise Ulo; Prince Florimund, Darios Rey Dignus; and Carabasse, Mac Macapendeg. The show’s artistic director is Girlie S. Royeca while the co-artistic director is Magirl Royeca.

Congratulations, Royeca Dance and Arts Center! Kudos to more performances!
