PEOPLE in the public service need to party, too, once in a while. That’s why Sunstar Davao management and staff held its Christmas party last December 7, 2018.

To make the event not just another “ordinary” Christmas party, the management decided to give it a twist by assigning this year’s theme of “K-Pop”, a short term for Korean Pop.

The Arcadia Events Center, located on Col. Emilio Escandor Street in Matina, Davao City was transformed into K-Pop World with all the employees garbed in Korean pop-themed attire. Yet, there would only be one man and lady of the night who epitomized the “real” K-pop dude and gal.

This year’s Man and Lady of the Night were Edwin Gipulao, from the production department, and Mixes Clair Dayanan, from the marketing department.

Before the party even started, Sunstar Davao employees were already treated to surprises by the door prizes as a prelude of more raffle prizes to come.

The event was officially opened by none other than Orlando Carvajal, former Sunstar Davao president, who led the newspaper company to where it is now, being the number one community daily in Davao region.

Those who arrived early or the “early birds” really got the “worm” or treat, as they were able to participate in the “Easter Egg Hunt”. But instead of hunting for Easter eggs, they “hunted” for money under the chairs, tables and on top of table displays.

Mark Perandos, social media content provider, found the “most number of money”, recalling that it was almost like picking fruits on trees.

There were also games like Beer-Drinking contest, where proofreader Jet Encila won, proving that he’s the King when it comes to beer.

In Christmas song relay, the editorial group won easily when their opponent just continued the song they were singing.

But what’s Christmas party without raffle draws?

Sunstar Davao this time chose home necessities for its raffle prizes, ranging from knife set, rice cooker, electric fan to as pricy as the main prizes of washing machine, flat-screen colored tv and double door refrigerator.

Two from the Graphics Department won the main prizes starting with Tonette Quintos who got the washing machine and Karla Degrano who owned the colored tv. Edwin Gipulao from the production was the luckiest among the employees, winning again this time the Whirlpool double door frost-free refrigerator.

Two employees also got the surprise raffle prize of Titan watch: Mark Perandos and Jeepy Compio, Sunstar Superbalita editor in chief.

Sunstar Davao also awarded this year’s most punctual/best in attendance employee during the event, where Virgilio Llanos and Cherilyn Limas both from the General and Administration department, and Gracielle Cuizon of the circulation department were given the award.

The model employees were also announced during the event: Julie Dumalag, HR and editorial assistant, was named the model employee for both the 2nd and 4th quarter of the year while Virgilio Llanos was the model employee for the 3rd quarter.

Dumalag was also hailed the most outstanding employee for the year 2018.

Meanwhile, the General and Admin Department was also awarded the Best Organization and Office Management Award.

The most awaited moment of all was the announcement of the Christmas Décor and Parol-Making contest winners as the prize for the contest usually will be used by every department for their department Christmas party.

The fourth place for the Christmas Décor and Parol-Making contest went to the Production Department and the third place went to the Editorial department.

The grand champion for this year’s best Christmas décor and parol went to the Marketing department while the G&A settled for the second place.

In her closing remarks, Sunstar Davao president Gina G. Atienza said that though the media industry is changing, Sunstar Davao is ready to adjust to the changes.

Everyone went home happy after the party, especially that food, particularly the lechon, was overflowing.

No wonder Christmas party is the event that every Sunstar Davao employee can hardly await.
