THREE Abu Sayyaf bandits and a soldier were killed, while two others were wounded in a firefight Thursday, December 13, as intensified military operations continue in Sulu, the military said.
Lieutenant Colonel Gerry Besana, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) information officer, said the firefight broke out around 2:25 a.m. Thursday in Minis Island, Patikul, Sulu.
The clash ensued as the Philippine Marine Ready Force-Sulu (PMRF-S) troops, who launched amphibious combat operation, spotted some 50 Abu Sayyaf bandits led by Majid Emamil.
Besana said aside from the fatalities, two other soldiers were wounded.
He said the slain and wounded soldiers belong to the 83rd and 62nd Marine Companies of the PMRF-S.
Those wounded were airlifted to Camp Navarro General Hospital in Zamboanga City, and full military honors will be accorded to the slain soldier, said Besana.
He said the troops recovered two M-14 rifles abandoned by Emamil's group.
Lieutenant General Arnel Dela Vega, Westmincom chief, said they are saddened with the death of the soldier.
Dela Vega assured that the Westmincom will extend the necessary assistance to the bereaved family.
He said the Joint Task Force Sulu continues to intensify their offensives aimed to neutralize the bandits and rescue all the remaining six hostages that include a Dutch, Indonesian and Vietnamese, and three Filipinos.
"All measures are now being undertaken, in accordance with the rules of engagement and with the support of the local government and the populace," Dela Vega said. (SunStar Philippines)
