A VENDOR who wants to continue selling at the night market along Legaspi St. and P. Lopez St. is asking the Cebu City Government to reconsider its policy in allowing them to sell.

The vendor, who requested anonymity, went to City Hall, Thursday, Dec. 13 in the hope that City Hall will allow her to continue selling.

“We have been selling ready-to-wear clothes for years already and we joined several night markets already, but this will be the first time that we are barred from selling just because we are not residents of the city,” she said in Cebuano.

The vendor resides in Lapu-lapu City.

Francisco “Bimbo” Fernandez, executive assistant of Mayor Tomas Osmeña, announced that the City will no longer allow vendors who are not from Cebu City to sell at the night market along Legaspi St. and P. Lopez St.

Fernandez said this is the first time that the City requires that the vendors should be city residents.

“We need to give priority to our residents. This is Cebu City, so we need to give priority to our residents,” he said.

Fernandez said vendors may no longer bring their voter’s certification to prove that they are city residents since the City has a master list of those who are residing in the city.

Aside from the resident requirement, Fernandez said it is also the first time that the City has taken over the management of the night market.

For years, some organizations have been managing the night market.

“They are no longer allowed to give money to any organizer or organization. They should only give their payment to the City Treasurer’s Office (CTO),” he said.

Fernandez said vendors will only pay P50 per night to CTO.

Fernandez said the policy is part of the thrust of Mayor Osmeña to serve the city residents first. (RVC)
