Crimes in Oro down by 45%

CRIME volume in the city for this year has dropped by almost half, according to the yearend report presented by the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo).

The city police office recorded a total of 3,829 crimes since January to November this year, compared to the 7,063 total crime volume recorded in 2017, which means it dropped to 45.78 percent.

Of the said figure, 876 were categorized as index crime. Index crimes are crimes committed against person and property such as murder (27); homicide (19); physical injury (235); rape (91); robbery (147); theft (296); and carnapping/motornapping (41).

Compared to the 2,452 index crimes recorded in 2017, index crimes this year has decreased to 131.61 percent.

Cocpo recorded 2,953 non-index crimes which is 35.95 percent decrease from the 4,611 index crimes recorded last year.

Non-index crimes are violations of the special laws and local ordinances.

This year, authorities strictly implemented the local ordinances following the Duterte administration's campaign against “tambay” and smoking ban which resulted to the arrest of 1,320 people.

The city police office has apprehended 433 people for drinking in prohibited places; smoking ban (301); half-naked in public places (241); minors violating curfew hours (294); and other ordinances (51).

With this figure, 79 cases were filed at the City Prosecutors Office, 13 minors were brought to the Tahanan ng Kabataan while 1,228 people were only reprimanded.
