Labor sector pushes wage increase for house helpers

A BACOLOD City labor leader is pushing for a P1,000 per month wage increase for “kasambahay” or house helpers.

Wennie Sancho, labor sector representative to the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board Western Visayas, said that from P3,500 per month salary for “kasambahay,” they are pushing to make it P4,500 per month.

Sancho, also the secretary-general of General Alliance of Workers Association, said house helpers need the wage increase, adding that some workers in the private sector have already received salary increases but since 2017 when the Kasambahay Law took effect, they were not able to receive any increase.

Sancho also shared that the local government units are not complying with the provision of the Kasambahay Law particularly on setting up a kasambahay desk in their respective city and municipal halls.

The desk, he said, is important to receive the complaints of the “kasambahay” and also to know their location and number in every locality.
