TEACHERS do not only have the heart to teach children in school but also serve as blessings to others even outside the campus.
Twenty-five teachers of Don Manuel H. Gutierrez Sr. Elementary School, DepEd-Matina District volunteered to sponsor the requests of 50 female detainees from Ray of Hope Village, Davao City Jail. Detainees wrote their personal wishes this Christmas on a piece of paper placed in a personally-woven wallet, which will be given to the sponsors.
This community project is a four-year-old program that started in 2015.
Christine Mae Olasiman initiated the program and committed to strengthen and sustain the advocacy of giving joy to those who are living behind bars.
Her sister Lovelia, one of the detainees and an Alternative Learning System (ALS) instructional manager of the village, inspired her to work on this outreach program upon hearing heart-warming stories from the detainees.
“The happiest people are not those getting more but those giving more. Since I get more joy out of giving joy to others, I started to put good deal of thought into the happiness that I am able to give especially to the less fortunate and to people who are living only out of privilege,” she said.
Requested items in the wish list will be distributed on December 19 at Davao City Jail, Maa, Davao City. (Janice D. Montalvo)
