Davao IMs in contrasting fates

DABAWENYO international masters (IMs) John Marvin Miciano and Oliver Dimakiling figured in contrasting fates in the fifth round of the ongoing 17th Asian Continental Chess Championships 2nd Manny Pacquiao Cup at Tiara Oriental Hotel in Makati City Friday.

The 18-year-old Miciano, seeded 48th, settled for a truce with Mongolian IM Sumiya Bilguun. He, however, dropped from 33rd place to 41st place with a total of 2.5 points.

Dimakiling, seeded 39th, for his part, succumbed to Filipino IM Daniel Quizon to be relegated to the 57th place from 48th with 1.5 points.

Filipinos Quizon, IM Haridas Pascua, IM Ricardo de Guzman, grand master John Paul Gomez, GM Darwin Laylo and IM Roderick Nava shared the 25th to 41st places with 2.5 points.

Miciano was set to collide with Vietnamese IM Anh Khoi Nguyen while was pitted against Chinese Taipei player Adelard Bai in their respective sixth round matches.

India's grand master (GM) SuryaShekhar Ganguly retained its top position with 4.5 points while Chinese GM Yi Wei earned four points to claim the solo second spot.

Malaysia's Fide master Lik Zang Lye led 14 other 3.5 scorers with superior tiebreaks.
