Pangan: Some noble awards

SM continues to receive accolades by way of awards for its exemplary deeds.

It maintains its vision to enrich its corporate social responsibility through its heightened commitment to increase its involvement in community projects and undertakings.

What is so endearing about this firm is its closeness to the disadvantaged persons so much so that it has established a counter for persons with disabilities (PWD) - SM Cares - and a foundation aimed at addressing the special needs of this special sector of our society.

It has won awards from the 29th Apolinario Mabini awards in ceremonies held at Club Filipino in San Juan City.

The Apolinario Mabini awards are a fitting salute to the great and sublime paralytic-Apolinario Mabini, the so-called Brains of the Revolution.

The SM awards thus include: silver for SM Seaside City Cebu; bronze for SM City Cabanatuan, SM City Clark, SM City Cauayan, SM City BF Paranaque, SM stores in Sucat, Cabanatuan, San Jose del Monte, East Ortigas, Trece Martires and SM Supermarket in SM Seaside.

Special awards were given to SM City San Lazaro, SM City Rosario, and SM store Makati. Mr. Hans Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings, Inc., was given the Mabini Presidential Recognition award for his dedication and passion in promoting awareness and inclusion for persons with disabilities in the SM malls. Similar accolade and recognition should be given to Engineer Bien C. Mateo, SM senior vice president for his immense contribution for PWD's welfare.

At the other side of the CSR spectrum of SM is SM Foundation which provides season-long vegetable training programs for farmers and marginalized families.

It gives this training to improve the families' status by helping them grow improved varieties of vegetables and other high-value crops which then could be sold to SM hyper/supermarkets.

Batches of farmers from Bacolod, Bohol, Nueva Ecija, and Zambales have all benefited from trainings given by SM Foundation.

The veggie trainings indeed are a great help to small-time farmers and individuals wishing to earn decent wages and earnest livelihood.
