ARMY Scout Rangers seized over the weekend two alleged hideouts of the New People's Army (NPA) believed to be the venue for the 50th anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) last Tuesday, December 26.

Captain Marcelino Quijano, civil military officer of the 403rd Brigade said a series of armed encounters between troops and NPA from December 12 to 13 in between the boundary of Agusan del Sur and Bukidnon resulted to the discovery of the NPA lairs.

On December 12, troops encountered around 40 fully-armed NPA rebels working on a 20x30 meterd hideout which, the Army said, can accommodate 120 persons.

"It's makeshift facilities strongly indicate that it is being prepared as a venue for a huge gathering of persons," Quijano said.

It has a multipurpose hall, 2 kitchens, and a water reservoir. A cellular phone, generator set, electrical wires, and some personal belongings were also recovered at the said hideout.

The following day, December 13, the Rangers clashed again with the same group of rebels. This time, troops discovered a bigger hideout with a 400x200 estimated dimension.

The area can accommodate around 120 persons and has huts and improvised beds.

A rifle grenade, 10 rounds of cal. 22 ammunition, 2 rounds of cal 5.56 ammunition, 150 rounds of machine gun ammunition, electric wires, explosive detonating cords, blasting caps, an explosive switch, medical kits, backpacks, personal belongings, and some documents were recovered.

"The hideouts were identified by the Scout Rangers after 6 days of hiking and based on the revelations of NPA surenderees," Quijano added.

Colonel Edgardo de Leon, 403rd Brigade commander commended the Rangers for the "big accomplishment."
