Closure eyed for erring bars

BAGUIO City Councilor Francisco “Pacoy” Roberto Ortega VI is eyeing to push for the closure of erring bars next year.

Ortega said bars along Salud Mitra, Leonard Wood road and Maharlika will be monitored for compliance to guidelines and rules set for establishments and, if found to be at fault, licenses and permits will not be renewed.

The councilor said barangay officials of Salud Mitra have asked him to help in the peace and order situation in their area as bars have mushroomed at the former residential village.

Ortega relayed he did an inspection of the area and was witness first hand to a brawl between two women. The scuffle went on unabated as no security guard intervened.

The city official relayed they had to intervene and reprimand the establishments which were operating without security and, upon further inspection, were found to have no fire exits.

Ortega said a general inspection of bars will be made to prepare plans for next year. Ensuring peace and order will be a priority, he added.

Establishments at the roof deck of Maharlika livelihood center will also be included in the scrutiny as complaints have often been raised against the establishments in the area.

Ortega said the entire council will be deliberating on the issue as permits for the entire area will be considered.

Ortega heads the committee on peace and order in the city council and has taken on the same advocacy as his late father.
