SCSIT eyes semis in Asaphil Junior Open

THE Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology (SCSIT) is in a must-win situation to keep their semis hopes alive in the 2018 Cebuana Lhuillier-Asaphil Junior Women’s 18-Under Softball Championships in Marikina City.

SCSIT dropped to a 3-2 (win-loss) record after falling short to Bulacan, 3-2, at the Sto Niño Softball Field on Monday, Dec. 17.

The Cebuana battlers started the tournament on a strong note on Saturday with a win 7-1 win over Naga City and a 10-0 blanking of Talavera, Nueva Ecija. On Dec. 16, SCSIT beat Tacloban, 13-0, before losing to Dasmariñas, 13-4.

SCSIT, which is in Bracket A, will still play three games in the elimination round. They will play a double-header on Tuesday against Tanauan, Batangas and Makati and will face Los Baños the next day.

SCSIT head coach Isiot Bacarisas told SunStar Cebu that he’s proud with the performance of the 15-man team regardless of the outcome of the tournament.

Only the top two teams in the two brackets will advance to the semifinals.

“We need to win the remaining three games. But whether we make it or not, I’m satisfied with my players especially this year. Only 17 were selected to play the tournament compared to 36 teams last year,” said Bacarisas in Cebuano.

Bacarisas said that SCSIT is composed of a young core with majority of the players aged 14 to 16.

“We played well against the strong teams in the country considering we have only one player at 18 years old,” said Bacarisas, who steered the team to a 5-3 slate last year.

The tournament, organized by the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines, will run until Dec. 22. (RSC)
