SWU launches scholarship for med students in need

THE Southwestern University Phinma Chairman’s Scholarship Program for the School of Medicine aims to provide students having financial difficulties with the skills, competencies and character that will make them distinguished doctors.

Applicants will be ranked based on the results of a socio-economic assessment test and an evaluation of their academic performance where the top 10 will undergo the National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) review. The university will cover the selected candidates’ NMAT fees. Students who pass the NMAT will take an entrance assessment of the School of Medicine where the top five will be awarded with the scholarship.

Selected candidates who will be awarded with the scholarship will be provided 100 percent coverage on tuition and miscellaneous fees, including a modest monthly allowance. Progress and study habits will also be monitored as long as the student is enjoying the scholarship.

Gilbert Braganza, vice president for student life, said the initiative will “help level the playing field and ensure more young people from non-privileged homes have access to quality medical education.”

Application is now open until Jan. 15.
