ONE of Cebu’s community dailies will no longer print its newspaper beginning New Year’s Eve to focus on its digital platform.
Cebu Daily News (CDN), which has been operating for 20 years since February 1998, will cease publishing its print format on January 1, 2019 after its uniform resource locator (URL) was acquired by Inquirer.net, the official digital platform of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
In their official statement, CDN and Inquirer.net publisher Abelardo Ulanday said the decision to stop publication of their print format and shift to digital are “in response to the media consumption habits of readers everywhere.”
“Our readers in the region and the Cebu community are first in our minds when we decided to continue CDN via the digital platform,” Ulanday said.
In a separate interview, CDN editor-in-chief Edralyn Benedicto said that while their print format will no longer be published next year, no personnel from their end will be affected by the major change.
“The printing press is not owned by CDN. It’s a separate company called PEF Printing Corp. Ga abang lang mi sa (We are just renting the) building from PEF, and we are paying them for printing CDN,” Benedicto said.
But before their final publication will be printed on December 31, PEF will retain a skeletal force to finish the last publications until the end of the year. (JKV)
