CAGAYAN de Oro ranked third among the areas in the country in terms of tax payment, according to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

Marietta Lorenzo, BIR deputy commissioner, said the BIR was able to collect P82.7 million, or 32 percent collection, from the city as of January 2010.

She said this makes Cagayan de Oro the third best tax payer next to Makati City and Quezon City.

“Cagayanons are very much cooperative in terms of paying taxes. There have been big changes ever since Esmeralda Tabuli, BIR-Northern Mindanao director, took over. The collection performance this year seems to be soaring high with only 5.92 percent deficit compared to last year’s 22.6 percent,” said Lorenzo, who was in the city Wednesday for the BIR’s nationwide tax campaign.

Lorenzo was all praises for Tabuli for the BIR’s effective tax campaign in the city.

She said the BIR hopes to generate P5 billion in revenues in April with the help of their new all-year round program, the Public Assistance and Awareness Campaign (Paac).

Paac aims to be highly visible and directed toward attaining maximum coverage through the tri-media to make the public fully aware of BIR’s tax campaign activities.

This, as a lot of strategies has been implemented by the agency for greater participation by the taxpayers as it ensures higher voluntary compliance on their tax obligations. (Nicole J. Managbanag)
