Better habits this New Year

I HOPE everyone is enjoying this holiday season. From gift-giving and selecting presents for our godchildren, to parties where we’re meeting friends near and far, the holiday season is a time for celebrations and get togethers, and to enjoy each other’s company.

We, Filipinos, love to eat this season. It’s forgivable to gain a few pounds here and there, as long as we resolve to lose it in the coming New Year! But aren’t we all making New Year’s Resolutions to be fitter, healthier and active, only to fail miserably after a few weeks? Why is that?

Every year, I get to learn something new. Why don’t most people stick to their New Year’s Resolutions? I think it’s because we make it dependent on willpower. And willpower does run out. After observing several successful people over the past few months, it seems like their health habits aren’t grounded on willpower but on selecting healthy habits, and making it a part of their routine.

What healthy habits can we do?

Here are several examples:

1. Get 30 minutes of movement in the morning. You can walk, run, jog, do yoga, as long as you get movement in.

2. Drink plenty of water. Instead of that soda, juice, alcoholic beverage—opt for water.

3. Replace your carbs with a healthier version.

4. Try to work-up a sweat everyday.

5. Plate your meals.

6. Eat slower.

7. Eat fruits or vegetables before every meal.

8. Decrease sugar in your coffee or tea.

9. Sleep a specific time and wake up at a specific time.

10. Meditate.

If you’re indulging this season, it’s fine. Live a little. But be mindful, the results you get in your body are dependent on the habits that you live by. Live well!
