Another cop killed by unidentified gunmen

PO2 Romeo Jumalon of the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 was shot dead on Sunday, Dec. 23.

Jumalon was the second police officer killed in Central Visayas in four days.

Senior Insp. Porferio Gabuya Jr. was shot dead by motorcycle-riding assassins in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental last Dec. 19.

Police have yet to determine the motives behind the murders.

Around 4 a.m., Jumalon was on his way to attend the dawn mass with his wife when he was shot several times by four men outside his house in Barangay Pit-os, Cebu City.

Before the incident happened, the victim went out of the house to check the engine of his vehicle.

A car stopped near Jumalon. Four men alighted and approached him before shooting him several times.

The police officer succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. His wife, who was inside their vehicle, was not hit.

Background check

Talamban Police Station Chief Alvin Llamedo said Jumalon parked his vehicle on the vacant lot across his house. The crime, he said, happened so fast that Jumalon’s wife failed to get the license plate of the assailants’ car.

Investigators recovered 30 empty shells of a .9mm pistol.

Jumalon was a former operative of the City Intelligence Branch of the Cebu City Police Office. The victim was transferred to the Personnel Holding Administration Unit (PHAU) of PRO 7. His duty was to check visitors at the gate.

Personnel in the PHAU are either facing investigations or in transition to other assignments.

Investigators will interview Jumalon’s family to determine if he received any threats.

Llamedo said they will also check Jumalon’s past record to check if he had been involved in the illegal drug trade.

Jumalon’s cell phone, which he left in the Talamban Police Station, will be examined for clues that might solve his murder. (FROM AYB, JKDP OF SUPERBALITA CEBU KAL)
