Satellite can track government projects, save lives

THE use of a satellite is eyed to better track government projects and help save lives during natural disasters, a researcher said.

“For example ang DBM (Department of Budget and Management) pwede nilang i-track ang project ng gobyerno using satellites. Malalaman halimbawa kung nagawa na ba itung bridge na ito . So this is just one application na pwede magamitan ng satellite (For example, DBM can use the satellites to track government-funded projects. They can know, for example, if bridges were already built. So this is just one application with the use of satellites),” University of the Philippines (UP) professor and Balik-Scientist Jose Ildefonso U. Rubrico said during a research colloquium.

Rubrico added with the country visited by an average of 20 typhoons per year, satellites can also be used in disaster mitigation.

However, he said the technology would require a huge amount of data to function accordingly.

Rubrico said the Philippines can get the necessary data.

“Actually we have big data from satellites. Right now the Philippines get these data from satellites like Diwata which we built along with Japan. We get images from Diwata 1 and Diwata 2, and we also get subscriptions from Google satellites that has high-resolution. And add the data which comes from Project Noah, Lidar,” Rubrico said.

Meanwhile, Rubrico underscored the importance of using data in training artificial intelligence (AI).

Rubrico said the tragedy of gathering data from funded projects is part of the contract. He added if the data is placed in robots, the information stored becomes sustainable for future references.

Rubrico’s research is a product of the Balik-Scientist program of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI).
