A WITTY response to a question asked during a beauty pageant inspired the designers of Atelier 369 to come up with a collaboration project.

The question: “What makes you blush?”

“And she simply answered ‘What makes me blush? My crush!’ It was so funny and witty! So, our group decided to do a photo shoot about it,” quipped Bree Esplanada, one of the designers. He was referring to Bb. Cebu candidate Kristine Gillamac, who represented the town of Minglanilla.

Esplanada with Mikhail Achas, Jessie Lastimosa, Andrea de la Torre and Lilet Delos Reyes, make up the blush-themed collaboration, each giving their own rendition of the color through their designs.

Esplanada’s suede halter top with sheer tulle was inspired by the sweetness of the color blush. The old rose design is embellished with floral and lace details. Lastimosa’s piece was part of her graduation collection in fashion school and was also inspired by women empowerment. For her, the color symbolizes fragility and femininity. Looking back, she admired the contestant’s candidness in answering the question. “There’s nothing wrong being real and just being yourself,” she said.

For Achas, the color resonated with him as he shared that it fit with his aesthetics, as seen in the full skirt and crop top with corded lace detailed ensemble. “I think blush is very feminine and soft,” he said.

De la Torre’s design not only showed what the color meant but also the designer’s admiration of the candidate’s answer.

“Kristine answered her pageant question with the perfect mix of personality, humor and wit in spite of whatever nerves she may have been experiencing,” she said. “To me, blushing is an act of defiance—an act of being confidently yourself. And I consider having that ability a process. So the white to blush ombré detachable skirt paired with skin tone stretch mini reflects that. While the tulle cropped top emblazoned with an embroidered bird and brass metal foliage signifies flight and pushing against the current of the wind.”

As for Delos Reyes’ design, it not only speaks of the color but also the beauty of a woman, mixing comfort and elegance.

“The color blush can affect us in two ways. It can be negative, like some say it shows weakness; ‘girlish’ and immature. But if you see deeply, it’s not just a pretty color. It’s a color that signifies love, motherhood, feminism,” shared Delos Reyes.

A dainty and clean color, blush comes in different shades of pink. No matter how one chooses to wear it, it will always stand out.
