TO ADDRESS the concern on the recent increase of inflation in Davao Region, the Department of Trade and Industry conducts “Diskwento Caravan” to bring more access to basic commodities, a trade official said.

The Diskwento Caravan is one of the initiatives of the trade department in providing consumers access basic goods and prime commodities at discounted or reduced prices.

Earlier in September, DTI- Davao del Sur in partnership with the local government of Panabo City and NCCC Supermarket and its suppliers, conducted the Mareng Inday Barangayan Diskwento Caravan on September 25 at Brgy. Gredu Gym.

DTI-Davao del Norte provincial director Romeo L. Castañaga said this is one of the steps of the government to ensure consumers are also given option to buy basic commodities at a lower price.

“At the end of the day, it would be the consumers who are affected because inflation has something to do with the increase of the basic commodity prices, and the consuming public is the first one affected,” DTI 11 assistant regional director Edwin O. Banquerigo said in a press conference.

Castañaga said other than the consumers who are affected with the inflation hike earlier in August; the unemployed Dabawenyos are the most affected with the inflation.

Meanwhile, Philippine Statistics Authority 11 data showed Davao Region’s inflation rate further accelerated to 7.1 percent in August 2018 which remained higher than the national inflation rate at 6.4 percent.

“All provinces in the region showed an increase rate in August 2018. It was highest in Compostela Valley with 7.2 percent, and lowest in Davao Oriental with 6.4 percent, while Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur posted the same with the regional rate at 7.1 percent,” PSA 11 reports.
