Craft Story Cebu, a creative nook that gathers the works of local artists, craftspeople and creative entrepreneurs, showcases locally-made and specialty-designed products to both locals and tourists. The artsy display behind the clear glass door is inviting and inspiring. Started by arts and crafts aficionados Kim Gillesania and Verne Ahyong, Craft Story Cebu’s aim is to get more people to support local creatives.
Kim and Verne started the concept by joining bazaars. Eventually, they made their dream of opening an arts and crafts store come true despite people saying that the business concept was not sustainable.
“We’ve been hearing stories of how stores like these aren’t sustainable in a provincial setting. To be honest, it’s scary thought. But the comments of the various artists and craftspeople we approached, drove us to do our best for this new venture,” said Kim.
Over 30 brands fill the shelves and peg boards of this 20 square meter space. Just like Craft Story Cebu, each product has it own story to tell, which everyone from different age groups can appreciate and learn from.
From toys and gadgets to self-care and food items, here are some of the brands featured: Oozy Slimes, Crafted Trails, WeAreWudiis, Coffeeteria PH, Crafted, bubble.ph, Oil and Symmetry, Spread and Co., Coffeeshop.ph and Best Honey.
What is an arts and crafts shop without arts and crafts materials?
Every art enthusiast will surely be in paradise with well-curated items available like cards, notebooks, bookmarks, calligraphy materials, washi tapes and stickers.
What’s more interesting is how these homegrown brands elevate traditional products, making it more appealing for the younger crowd.
Four of these are Maria Len Painting’s hand-painted banig bags, Kalimutaw’s dried fish rubbings, The Random PH Club’s temporary tattoos and Doris Doodles’ hand-painted stones.
Handcrafted fashion accessories, charm bracelets, necklaces, earrings, handwoven wallets and coin purses that promote Philippine tourism and talent are also showcased.
For Kim and Verne, every piece of art and craft tells a story. They believe that stories have the power to inspire and change lives for the better. With their store, they hope that they can help these local artists and craftspeople share their stories to everyone.
