Palace directs Mindanao local execs to monitor quake-hit areas

MALACAÑANG urged local government units in Mindanao on Saturday, December 29, to closely monitor the areas affected by the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Davao Oriental.

In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo instructed Mindanao local officials to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of the people.

Panelo's statement came after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that a 7.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded at 11:39 a.m., and epicenter was located 162 kilometers southeast of Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental.

Phivolcs has also issued a tsunami warning to 11 nearby provinces.

“The Palace urges local government units in Mindanao to closely monitor their respective areas of jurisdiction and take precautionary measures, particularly those in the coastal areas, in view of possible aftershocks, tsunami or both,” Panelo said.

“We ask everyone to be alert and cooperate as we pray for the safety of all,” he added.
