TWO-TIME world title challenger and San Diego-based Pinoy fighter Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta predicts that Pinoy boxing icon and World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao will win by unanimous decision over challenger Adrien Broner.

According to Gesta, Broner (30) can’t match the fighting Senator Pacquiao (40) by points, quickness and speed despite the latter’s advanced age.

“It’s true that Broner is a counter-puncher. He has a new trainer, Kevin (Cunninham), but he’s not that good in looking for his timing, unlike Juan Manuel Marquez, who knows when to throw his punches,” Gesta told Superbalita via telephone.

Age won’t be a problem for Pacquiao, added Gesta, because the “Pac-Man” is very disciplined with his body, just like former unified champion Bernard Hopkins, who fought and became a champion through his 40s.

“Broner’s only chance of winning is by knockout. But it’s a uphill climb because of his style. I admire Manny because of his endurance and awkwardness of his style, which is his forte. It’s very hard to do, but he can land his punches,” said the native of Brgy. Labogon in Mandaue City.

According to the Muay Thai fighter-turned-boxer Gesta, although it won’t be as big as the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, it will still sell because of Broner’s brash personality and Pacquiao’s coming off of a seventh round knockout of Lucas Matthysse.

Gesta is the current World Boxing Organization (WBO) NABO lightweight king and was supposed to see action on Jan. 26 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. But the fight was pushed back to February because his trainer, Freddie Roach, is still focused on Pacquiao.
