THE Bacolod Real Estate and Development Corporation (Bredco) has proven its port capability that plays a major role in the industrialization and development of the Visayan region.

Romeo Casela, manager of Bredco port, revealed that on December 26, five units of transformers weighing 152 metric tons each and another two units of transformers weighing 82 metric tons of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) arrived at Bredco International Port direct from China.

The heavy shipments of special transformers were manufactured by GE China for NGCP's enhancement of power distribution in Iloilo and Negros.

“The fact that these huge industrial components of NGCP were unloaded at Bredco port, that tells us of Bredco port's handling capability - that the port can accommodate more foreign ships and cargoes,” Casela said.

Moreover, special transformers were unloaded at Bredco port

on December 27 through a chartered special heavy lift vessel with crane capacity of 250 metric tons.

Two of the said units are for Negros Occidental while the three other units were loaded to a roll-on, roll-off (ro-ro) vessel to Barotac Viejo, Iloilo, Casela said.

“Bredco port is really contributing to the region in terms of development and industrialization. The strength of the pier deck can accommodate such heavy loads,” he added.

More development

Casela also said that this year, the new management of Bredco will pour in an additional budget for more development projects.

“We are still reviewing the facilities and we have already a plan for the improvement of the ro-ro terminal this year,” he said.

In 2019, the projects of the new management includes the construction of the new ro-ro terminal, fencing of the perimeter for a more secure port, repair of the pier deck aprons, installation of lighting facilities and resumption of the dredging operation, and the construction of a bigger parking area which will be located at the old terminals of the fastcrafts which will soon be demolished.

The fastcraft terminals have been transferred to the new terminal facility since December 20.

“When we transfer here, we are still in the state of developing all the facilities. The ro-ro passengers are the next step,” he said. (TDE)
