13,000 VAWC cases since 2004

DAVAO City's Integrated Gender and Development Division (IGDD) recorded 13,001 violence against women and children (VAWC) cases since its establishment in 2004 until June 2018.

In the data sent to SunStar Davao by IGDD head Lorna Mandin, it showed that there were 845 cases of violence against women (VAW) in the first and second quarter of 2018, while seven are cases of violence against children.

There are 1,732 VAWC cases recorded in 2016, 1,834 in 2017, and 1,408 in January to June 2018.

The IGDD also recorded highly-populated areas in the city also have the most number of VAWC cases. Talomo District recorded the highest number of cases with 271 from January to June 2018, followed by Buhangin District with 141, and Poblacion District with 96 cases.

In 2016, the Talomo District also got the highest number of recorded cases with 320.

Economic abuse or an act that make or attempt to make a woman financially dependent according to Republic Act 9262 has the highest number of cases for 2018 with 455 in the first and second quarter. Other forms of abuses are physical, emotional, and sexual. Nine sexual abuses were recorded on the same period.

Majority of these cases of abuse are women aging 18 to 35 years old, mostly are homemakers and private employees.
