BFP: Fire incidents in region up by 62 percent

THE blaze that razed Metro Ayala Center Cebu in January last year contributed to the P1.1 billion in damage caused by fires in the first 11 months of 2018.

In 2017, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) 7 only recorded P100 million worth of damage to properties.

According to the statistics kept by BFP 7, 1,011 fire incidents happened in Central Visayas from January to November 2018, a 62 percent increase from the 622 incidents in the same period in 2017.

“Fiery” year

From January to November last year, Cebu Province recorded 550 fire incidents, with damage estimated at around P1,058,923,805.

In 2017, BFP 7 recorded 474 fire incidents in the province, with P81 million worth of damage.

BFP 7 did not include in its record the fire incidents that happened in Negros Oriental in 2017 as the province was still part of the Negros Island Region.

Last January was the most devastating for Central Visayas in terms of fire-related incidents, which destroyed P805 million worth of properties.

The BFP 7 recorded the most fire incidents in the region last August, with 161: 82 in Cebu, 61 in Bohol, 13 in Negros Oriental, two in Siquijor and two in Lapu-Lapu City. (FROM HBL OF SUPERBALITA CEBU / KAL)
