117k cats, dogs rabies-free

DAVAO City Veterinarian’s Office (CVO) vaccinated a total of 117,106 cats and dogs from January to October 2018.

CVO focal person for Rabies and Control program and chief of Animal Disease Prevention and Control Section Gay Pallar told SunStar Davao yesterday that approximately there are 150,000 cats and dogs in the city.

In 2017, only 101,693 cats and dogs were vaccinated from January to December.

"Nag-intensify gyud mi to the extent na nagbalay-balay na mi for vaccination (We intensified rabies vaccination to the extent that we do it house-to-house)," Pallar said.

Last September 2018, CVO conducted free spay and neuter to cats and dogs in the city to reduce the population of stray pets which may contribute to the spread of rabies.

Pallar said they have also distributed over 63,000 brochures to help spread awareness and facts about rabies to the public.

"Pag naa ta sa areas, pag magbakuna, maghatag ta og mga flyers. Maghatag ta sa mga clients, students as part of our campaign sa anti-rabies (If we are in the area for vaccination, we also give out flyers to our clients and some students. This is part of our campaign)," she said.

CVO also reported a total of 599 sessions of information education campaign (IEC) or more than 16,800 participants for responsible pet ownership (RPO) as part of their intensified anti-rabies campaign.
