City picks retired cop as new disaster chief

RETIRED Police Superintendent (PSupt) Alfredo Baluran is now the chief of Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO).

During the special session of the 18th Davao City Council on Friday, January 4, members of the Council welcomed Baluran during his first day of office.

"This is my first day of office and napalaban dayon sa trabaho. I'm on the process of adjusting myself sa bag-o na trabaho," Baluran said, pertaining to the special session urgently made for the city’s calamity fund to be given to stricken areas of Tropical Depression Usman.

"I'm working with (former CDRRMO chief) Sir Emmanuel Jaldon since siya man gyud ang hands-on diha (I'm working with Jaldon since he was the one who's hands-on on the job). I need to know more and more trainings to equip myself for this assignment," he said.

Baluran said he believes that the city already has the technology so he will now focus on improving and systematizing some areas, as well as manage the equipment properly.

"Davao City already has the technology. Daghan naman ta og equipment. There are still ongoing projects to be implemented," Baluran said.

Meanwhile, Baluran said that the position he assumed is his career's greatest challenge.

"Ang trabaho sa CDRRMO is to save life and that is also one function of a law enforcer," Baluran said, adding that being a law enforcer before will help him in the new field.
