Security measures up as city hosts huge sports events in 2019

SECURITY forces are gearing up for several huge sporting events lined up in Davao City this year.

“We will be having more coordinating conferences with all the stakeholders. Our checkpoint operations both fixed and random will be enhanced. Intel monitoring in coordination with other agencies will be strengthened as well,” Task Force Davao (TFD) Commander Colonel Nolasco Mempin said on Friday, January 4.

Among the events that will be held here are the Davao Region Athletics Association (Davraa) Meet 2019 which will start the end of this month and the Palarong Pambansa 2019 in April. The city will also host the Regional Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) Meet 2019 and National Prisaa Games 2019.

For the second year, Davao City will also host Ironman 70.3 triathlon race on March 24. The event is expected to attract close to 2,000 domestic and foreign participants.

Mempin said aside from sports events, they will also prepare for the midterm election in May and Araw ng Dabaw in March.

“We will be requesting augmentation from 10ID (10th Infantry Division) during critical dates of these major events,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mempin assured that based on their monitoring there are no direct threats posed by terrorist groups to Davao City at the moment. Despite this, TFD will keep its guard up and necessary security measures have been laid out.

With the recent bombing in Cotabato City, Mempin said Task Force Davao intensified its joint checkpoint with the Philippine National Police (PNP).
