Lacson: Wellness tips for 2019

WHAT is wellness? What makes up a sound body and mind? According to the World Health Organization, wellness is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” It is more than being free from illness; it is a dynamic process of change and growth.

This means that we have to feel, look, and think good all at the same time. Our physical and mental health are highly connected to one another and thus, they both cause impact once you encounter problems in either area.

Wellness matters. It matters because our well-being rests on everything we do and every emotion we feel. We need to maintain an optimal level of wellness since it is crucial in living a higher quality life. In turn, our well-being directly affects our actions and emotions. It is an ongoing circle. Therefore, it is important for everyone to achieve optimal wellness in order to subdue stress, reduce the risk of illness and ensure positive interactions.

The eight dimensions of wellness are emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual. Emotional wellness involves the capacity to cope effectively with life and creating satisfying relationships. This is particularly important for all of us since we need peace and harmony in our everyday lives. Conflicts and personal problems involving other people cause stress and negative impacts in our overall well-being.

Environmental wellness on the other hand pertains to good health by occupying pleasant, stimulating environments that support well-being. This means that we also have to achieve cleanliness and order in our personal, work and other spaces that we occupy. This means that it is also best for us to declutter and organize all our belongings so that we can attain this wellness.

Financial wellness is the satisfaction with current and future financial situations, and this is one of the highly important aspects that all of us need to deal with properly. It is both true that money cannot buy everything, but with the sense of financial stability, we can also achieve security and stability for our family and ourselves.

Intellectual wellness is recognizing creative abilities and finding ways to expand knowledge and skills. Thus, we have to remind ourselves that we should not stop from learning. We always have to find ways on how we can expand our horizons and our reach so that we can always embrace change and adapt to it suitably.

Occupational wellness is the personal satisfaction and enrichment from one’s work. We have to love our jobs, and we have to love what we are doing. If you are not happy with your career now, then you must think twice if you should make a detour or a change of heart.

Physical wellness is recognizing the need for physical activity, healthy foods, and sleep. Physical wellness, as one of the eight dimensions of wellness relates to maintaining a healthy body and seeking care when needed. Physical health is attained through exercise, eating well, getting enough sleep, paying attention to the signs of illness, and getting help when needed. Each of us should strive for a synergy between a sound diet and physical exercise, as well as the need for moderation, variety and balance to achieve good nutrition.

Social wellness is developing a sense of connection, belonging, and a well-developed support system. This means that we should have a strong back up or support system in our families, friends, and even co-workers. No one is an island, and we need to connect with people in order for us to achieve this aspect of wellness.

Lastly, spiritual wellness is expanding a sense of purpose and meaning in life. We should always look for our purpose in life, and when we find it, we need to continue doing the best we can to stay true to it. It is the higher sense of our existence, and it supersedes all the other aspects of our existence.

In order for us to achieve an ideal sense of wellness, we have to make it as a part of our everyday life. We have to nurture every aspect of our well-being in order for us to achieve our self-actualization, the highest human need.
