Sunio: Negativity and maturity

THE world has probably grown bitter—and continues to grow more to be one by each year. We can see evident in the “NYE” social media posts of many millennials.

“You know you’re mature when new years do not excite you anymore,” said one new year’s eve post I saw online.

A lot of users also sarcastically post against “new year’s essays,” “new year, new me,” and similar posts.

We understand that maybe, bandwagoning might be sickening already, and that people say the same stuff every end and beginning of the year, that’s why they make fun of these new year essays.

But what I did understand is that people are tired of hoping and hearing the same mantra that doesn’t seem to manifest in the middle of the year.

Most have also fallen bitter when they saw that their pace was not as good or as fast as the others. The June 2016 issue of Current Opinion in Psychology found that envying your friends on Facebook leads to depression.

According to www.psychologytoday.com, people become more depressed as they see the happy status of updates of friends and families about vacation, accomplishments, and other events because they tend to compare their lives with their Facebook friends.

Sarah Diefenbach, a professor at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, also published about the “selfie paradox.” Reader’s Digest defines the selfie paradox as “the idea that we like taking selfies but seriously dislike looking at other people’s selfies online.”

I don’t think it’s simply because the world has had enough of vanity already. Again, it’s because they tend to compare themselves with others. As a defense mechanism, they would prefer to ‘dislike’ the post, rather than get depressed over it.

Might it be that the ‘disinterest’ for the new year is just a defense mechanism against frustrations and fear of not attaining what you have hoped for?

Might it be that you are getting sick of the NYE essays because you yourself already failed to achieve what you promised in the beginning of the year for several times already? Or that you saw nothing to celebrate about your previous year?

There’s an ongoing culture of negativity among the youth. It believes that hatred and depression is cool. Be passive, low-key, and just survive, they said.

But that’s not true. Negativity will never be cool. Depression should never be normal. There is a need to change this perception immediately.
