10 NPA rebels surrender in Agusan del Sur

TEN former New People's Army (NPA) rebels spent New Year's Eve with soldiers after surrendering to authorities just before the yuletide season in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.

The communist insurgents belonged to Guerilla Front 3 (GF3) of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC).

Sonny also known as “Boss & Mark,” the commander of GF3 and nine others joined the soldiers led by Brigadier General Andres Centino, the commanding officer of the Army's 401st Infantry, in celebrating the New Year’s Eve.

Centino said that it was his first time to celebrate the New Year with former NPA members.

“Despite my several decades of fighting the CPP-NPA, I still believe that it is still best to choose to follow the path to peace,” he said.

“To our brothers and sisters who just returned to the government last Christmas day, I am happy that you chose the path to peace just in time for this yuletide season. Let us work together for a peaceful 2019 by helping us convince your former comrades to follow suit in heeding to the government’s call for peace. Let them know that, we welcome former NPA members who to return to the folds of the law and that they are taken cared of just like what we are doing with you,” he added.

It can be recalled that an entire unit of the NPA-GF3 surrendered to authorities and brought a total of 14 firearms, including several magazines, three commercial icom radios and more than 1,300 ammunition.
