Vet office targets ‘rabies-free’ Davao City

THE Davao City Veterinary Office (CVO) is still hopeful to achieve a rabies-free city despite insufficiency in the city's 2019 allocation for anti-rabies vaccines.

CVO focal person for Rabies and Control program coordinator and chief of Animal Disease Prevention and Control Section Doctor Gay Pallar said Friday, January 4, 2019 that just like any other city in the country, Davao City aims to be rabies-free in 2020.

"Naa tay budget but dili siya sufficient. Nanginahanglan pa gyud ta og support sa Department of Agriculture and Bureau of Animal Industry (We have budget for anti-rabies vaccines but it is not sufficient. We needed support from the DA-BAI)," Pallar said.

She added that she actually asked the said office for additional 5,000 vials or rabies-vaccines that can accommodate a total of 50,000 pets and surpass the total number of vaccinated cats and dogs last year.

"Actually kadtong 2018, dako og nahatag ang national office mao na nga nakaabot ta og more than 117,000 (Actually in 2018, the national office gave us bigger budget that is why we were able to vaccinate more than 117,000)," Pallar said.

Each vial has 10 milliliter (ml) dosage and each cat or dog need 1 ml dosage to be rabies-free.

Meanwhile, Pallar said that she will submit proposal to increase the city's budget for anti-rabies vaccines.
