Allow more buses in southern Cebu, LTFRB told

THE Cebu South Bus Terminal (CSBT) management urged the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 7 to allow more passenger bus units to travel to southern Cebu.

CSBT terminal manager Jonathan Tumulak asked the LTFRB 7 to lift the moratorium on the issuance of new franchises for public utility buses as there is a need for additional buses to transport passengers during the holidays.

“One of our evidence on why we lack buses is the peak season, like the past Christmas and the New Year’s Day celebrations. Several commuters waited for hours before they were able to get a ride,” Tumulak said.

He said some buses did not travel as some drivers were tired while others celebrated Christmas and the New Year with their families.

Cebu Provincial Bus and Mini Bus Operators Cooperative president Julito “Julie” Flores said more than 400 PUBs are plying the southern Cebu routes.

LTFRB 7 Director Eduardo Montealto Jr., however, said he cannot heed Tumulak’s suggestion unless the local government units already have their respective Local Public Transport Route Plans, which would modify existing routes or create new ones to meet passenger demand.
