A RAPE-SLAY suspect died inside the jail on Sunday, January 6 after committing suicide by hanging himself.

The detainee was identified as Lemar Suan Cano, 20 years old, a tire man who was living in Jasa 2, Sasa and a resident of the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos). He is facing homicide charges for allegedly raping and killing a six-year old girl in December 2018.

Davao City Police Office spokesperson Police Senior Inspector Ma. Teresita Gaspan said around 3:45 a.m., a Jail Custodian of Sasa Police Station conducted a clearing and inspection operation at the jail cells to all detainees.

The guard on duty instructed Cano to clean, arrange the personal belongings, and remove all the hummocks used by the detainees in their sleeping areas. Cano was left to clean the facility while the other detainees were subjected to physical accounting and body frisking near the station's radio room.

After the operation, the officer returned to the detention cell where Cano was left cleaning only to discover that he had hung himself using a color blue rope tied at the railings of the ceiling of the comfort room of his cell.

The jail guard called for assistance from other officers in the station in an effort to help Cano. The officers helped the jail guard to untie the rope from Lemar's neck. The brought the suspect out of the cell to give him first aid.

Upon initial pulse check, Cano still has a pulse and was rushed to the Southern Philippines Medical Center. However, he was declared dead on arrival by his attending physician at 4:55 a.m.

In 2018, three rape-slay suspects were also killed for allegedly grabbing the gun of the police.

When Cano was arrested last December 28, 2018, he told reporters that he would not dare to grab the gun of a police officer because he would end up dead.
