BAGUIO City Mayor Mauricio Domogan has refused to sign a City Council resolution allowing the operation of a controversial carnival and amusement rides at the children’s playground in Burnham Park, the same site of a carnival last summer.

Domogan said he will return the resolution without his signature to the City Council because of the numerous complaints that were brought to his attention.

The resolution, which was passed on December 27, 2018, authorized the five-month operation of the Ola carnival and amusement rides in the children’s playground starting the first week of February.

The complaints cited unsafe rides and the allegedly poor condition of the facilities.

“We do not want to encounter the same problems that were experienced by the city when we allowed the operation of the carnival and amusement rides last summer. We are not in favor of the resumption of the operation of the controversial amusement rides that is why we will just make do with what the park can offer to the public,” Domogan said.

Personnel of the City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO) confirmed the controversial carnival operator was able to restore the damaged pavement within its area of operation but it was not able to restore the damaged grounds on the back portion of the children’s playground.

Under the proposed terms of the operation of the amusement rides and carnival, the operator will pay to the local government the amount of P500,000 for its five-month operation.

Domogan said the amount is not enough to compensate for whatever damage will be sustained by the park. (PR)
