Refs undergo seminar for 3x3 world record attempt

MORE than 70 referees and officials took up a refresher course to prepare them in the upcoming Chooks-to-Go SBP 3x3 Basketball Tournament set on Jan. 12 to 13 at the Sisters of Mary Boystown (SMS) and SMS-Girlstown campuses.

Fiba Asia’s commissioner Hector Villanueva spearheaded the seminar attended by officials and referees from Cebu and other provinces at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in Gen. Maxilom Ave. Campus Gym last Saturday, Jan. 5.

The 3x3 tournament sponsored by Chooks-to-Go will attempt to set a record with a massive simultaneous games played by Under-18 players. The event will be joined by close to 3,000 students from SMS-Boystown and SMS-Girlstown.

The event will also try to help improve the country’s 3x3 world ranking, which is currently at No. 25.

The refresher course is aimed to assure the quality of every game with about 1,111 players or 277 teams from SMS-Boystown and 1,588 players or 387 squads from SMS-Girlstown enlisted to play.

The head coach of the SMS grassroots basketball program, Van Helan Parmis, said that players are excited to be part of this historic basketball tournament.

“They already have the experience on 3x3. They have also undergone basic basketball training. All of them are excited to play because it’s a tournament and the intensity is different,” he said.

The two-day tournament will be played at the SMS-Boystown in Minglanilla on the first day and at the SMS-Girlstown in Talisay on the second day. (RSC)
