Caraga police intensifies illegal logging ops

AUTHORITIES seized P145,827 worth of illegal logs and arrested six suspects during the anti-illegal logging operations in the different provinces of Caraga Region over the weekend.

In Agusan del Sur, police confiscated 63 pieces of round logs with an estimated volume of 17.95 cubic meters valued at P53,850 in San Luis town, while operatives from Trento Police Station arrested 2 individuals who yielded two units of Bonggo Elf and 2,800 board feet of Lauan flitches worth P78,400.

Meanwhile in barangay Diatagon, Surigao del Sur, 2 persons were also arrested for illegally transporting about 253 board feet of lauan lumber worth of P5,566.

In Carrascal, Surigao del Sur, a person was also captured after police found his motorcycle loaded with 172 board feet of Lauan lumber worth P3,096.

In Dinagat Islands, police nabbed another suspect in San Jose town when he yielded 163.85 board feet of white Lauan and miscellaneous valued at P4,915.

Caraga’s top cop Chief Superintendent Gilberto Cruz assured the community that the police in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will go after offenders and ensure that laws on environmental protection are strictly implemented.

Lauan, also known as Philippine Mahogany, is an endemic dipterocarp species protected by Executive Order 23 from logging.

Under the EO, all naturally-growing indigenous trees cannot be cut down.
