Food poisoning downs 37 people in Dansolihon

SOME 37 residents of barangay Dansolihon in Cagayan de Oro City were admitted at the JR Borja General Hospital (JRBGH) on Sunday night after experiencing suspected food poisoning from cooked noodles locally known as “bam-i.”

Dr. Maria Magdalena Juan, medical officer of the city hospital said 27 of the patients were children and other 10 adults. They arrived at 11 p.m. on January 6 and all experienced vomiting and diarrhea.

Juan said the 36 patients were discharged Monday morning, January 7, except for one who was referred to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) for further treatment.

She said the patients responded to the dehydration treatment.

According to the residents, they had a new year party and all ate the “bam-i” -- a stir-fried noodle dish using the bean thread glass noodles. After the party, some attendees also brought some leftover bam-i to their homes.

"Ang ilang gidudahan sa cause sa poisoning is ang pansit (bam-i) kay before daw naluto, medyo lahi na daw ang color," she said.

"Maybe wala natarong ug luto kay labina dinaghan ang pagluto, but we still have to get food sample to confirm this," she adds.

Juan said the bacteria that caused the patients' sickness is yet to be determined.

The incident is now being investigated by the Department of Health.

Juan reminded the public to always observe cleanliness when preparing food.

"If they want to bring the food home, they should make sure to pack it and heat it with the right amount of temperature before eating it again," she added.
