Mandaue pushes liquor ban

A liquor ban will be implemented in Mandaue City to avoid any untoward incident during the Feast of the Santo Niño and the Sinulog parade.

Mayor Luigi Quisumbing said the ban will start on Jan. 18 and will end on Jan. 20, from 1 a.m. until 5 a.m.

“We would like to make sure that everybody during Sinulog is safe,” he said.

Most of the drivers who figured in vehicular accidents during the holidays were drunk.

Quisumbing said the establishments that sell liquors should stop when the clock strikes 1 a.m.

The City Legal Office said that a person who is seen carrying a bottle of liquor in public will be arrested and will be charged for violating the city ordinance on drunkenness.

Meanwhile, a dance music festival was allowed in Mandaue City in January 2018, but Quisumbing said he decided not to allow the event again this month.

Quisumbing has not approved any application for permits from business establishments that plan to organize parties during the Sinulog week.

He said the establishments can hold parties in their premises, but the owners must follow the liquor ban.

Last week, Mandaue City Police Office Director Julian Entoma said they will not allow street parties.

During the Traslacion on Jan. 18, the image of the Holy Child will be received on the bridge in Barangay Subangdaku, the boundary of the cities of Mandaue and Cebu.

The convoy carrying the religious icon will travel along A. Lopez Jaena St. and will make a turn towards A. Del Rosario St. It will turn right to S.B. Cabahug St. until the National Shrine of St. Joseph.

Quisumbing said he will meet with Entoma, police station chiefs and officials from Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue, City Social Welfare Office, City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and others to discuss their preparations for the Sinulog. (From FMD OF SuperBalita Cebu, KAL)
