Trade department seeks to help more MSMEs in 2019

FOR 2019, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Davao will be putting more efforts into assisting micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

DTI-Davao del Sur director Delia Ayano underscored the importance of supporting the MSMEs in the country, saying that the small enterprises contribute a large part in the country’s economy and employment.

DTI’s records in 2017 showed that MSMEs provided a total of 4,879,179 jobs or 63.3 percent of the total jobs generated by all types of business establishments in the country. MSMEs account for 25 percent of the country’s total exports revenue. It is also estimated that 60 percent of all exporters in the country belong to MSME sector. In terms of value adding, the MSME sector contributed 35.7 percent of the total value-added products in the country.

Meanwhile, Ayano said DTI surpassed its targets in MSME development and aims to double the target in 2019.

DTI-Davao assisted around 8,840 MSMEs in conducting different technical and business seminars. Of which, around 248 MSMEs are doing e-commerce which is over the target of 228 for 2018.

In addition, around 50 prototypes developed from One Town, One Product (OTOP) Next Gen and other product development activities last year. OTOP products include Romblon bags and basket, sling bags, abaca placement and runner, and food basket. (GAD)
