Bring umbrella, coat, devotees encouraged

DEVOTEES who plan to attend the traditional Walk with Jesus and the first novena mass on Thursday, Jan. 10, had better bring umbrellas and rain gear.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported that devotees could encounter cloudy and rainy weather on Thursday due to winds brought by the yearly Amihan or northeast monsoon winds and a possible return of the tail-end of a cold front.

Organizers of this year’s Fiesta Señor also announced that they would no longer bring the pilgrim image of the Santo Niño for visits to various places starting on Thursday in preparation for the first of nine novena masses held at the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño.

Jhomer Eclarino, Pagasa Mactan weather specialist, said it’s possible that scattered rain showers could occur on Thursday.

Eclarino said based on their special forecast on Thursday, low to moderate rain showers are likely to happen any time of the day.

With the kickoff of this year’s Fiesta Señor set on Thursday, fiesta organizers are also concluding the scheduled visitations of the Basilica’s pilgrim image.

Fr. Pacifico “Jun” Nohara Jr., OSA, the Basilica’s rector and over-all chairman of the Fiesta Señor, said that since Friday last week, they brought the pilgrim image to various hospitals and jails in Cebu.

On Thursday dawn, the Guadalupe church will hold a send-off mass for the pilgrim image before it proceeds to Fuente Osmeña for the traditional Walk with Jesus.

Nohara urged devotees to attend the traditional procession to kick off this year’s Fiesta Señor.

“Aside (from the fact) that it will open the nine-day novena masses, the activity also aims to show God’s sacrifice, who showed us his life as a child among us,” Nohara told reporters in Cebuano. (RTF, From FMD of SuperBalita Cebu, JKV)
